'Bear gives Abinger some Hammer!'
By Nick Goodburn
Graveney 272 - 7 declared (from 37.4 overs)
Abinger
Hammer 98 - 8
(from 41 overs)
Match Drawn
Graveney
skipper Paul Jeffels won the toss at Abinger Hammer and in overcast
conditions elected to bat. After a solid knock in the previous
game, Nick Goodburn opened the batting again, but in the absence of
Rob Davies, had a new partner in Tim Eveleigh, given the chance to
build an innings. Nick soon began to find his rhythm and hit a 3
good boundaries, before Big Tim was out caught for 2, departing the
field to be told he should have "hit the ball hard" by his skipper.
Howard
Hamilton, also given a chance to play himself in up the order played
and missed a few deliveries, but hit a couple of nice fours before
he too perished, offering a soft caught and bowled off what would
have surely been called a wide! Graveney were 28-2. In strode the
Bear, surely super confident after his previous knock at Newdigate,
and with Nick starting to find regular boundaries the scoring
rate started to increase.
With the score
on 76 Nick then was unlucky to be bowled for 42 by one that
ricocheted off his pad onto the stump when he looked well set for a
big score. Pradeep came and went quickly, LBW without scoring,
before Barry Gray joined Bear in the middle. Barry hit some good
shots including a couple of swept sixes in making 34, during which
time Bear took advantage of some buffet bowling to pass
50, thrashing some big sixes that threatened the crowd in the
pavillion. Now in full flow, their partnership realised 113 as Bear
raced to a chanceless ton, before surviving what appeared to be a
clear stumping which Howard, umpiring at Square Leg, missed because
he was taking a drag on a cigarette! Barry had departed to a sharp
catch, and Bear eventually for 132, with Jez Skidmore then adding a
solid 22, and Dave Moody 6 not out, including hitting his second
ball for four courtesy of a reverse sweep, to the delight of the
watching Graveney players, who had previously watched the Bear
attempt the shot twice without success.
Bear declared
10 minutes before tea to give Graveney the extra time to attempt to
bowl out the opposition, during which time Dave Moody took great
pleasure in telling our centurian that his, and not the Bear's, was
the way to hit a reverse sweep!
After tea, the
Graveney opening bowlers produced a miserly spell, with Pradeep Jain
and Dave Price both troubling the batsmen. Pradeep grabbed two early
wickets, dismissing both openers, courtesy of a catch at point by
Jez, and a superb delivery that took the top of off stump. He also
took the top of Dave Moody's head withe a ball that took off down
the leg side. Luckily Dave was OK having declared it only a glancing
blow.
Jay Vibert,
sporting the new facial look he acquired in his last nets
session, then joined the attack and himself took 2 wickets, his
first in his very first over when he clean bowled the batsman,
before Dave Price calmly effected a run out to leave the Hammer deep
in touble at 32-4. Tim Eveleigh took a little tap (3-0-20-0) before
Tim Bunn, opting to bowl slow stuff rather than his usual medium
pace bowled a mean spell of his own causing the batsmen a few
problems. Jez and the Bear took their equally tight turn, before
Barry Gray (3-0-3-1) grabbed a good wicket. Pradeep (8-6-4-3), Jay
(5-0-21-2) and Tim Bunn (6-2-5-1)were all brought back as the overs
srtarted to disappear, but despite Pradeep picking up a third
wicket, the 9th wicket pairing stood firm for the final few overs,
including a last burst from Dave Price (6-2-6-0), to force a draw.
Overall,
Graveney were well worth a win, but at the end just could not force
the last couple of wickets to secure the result they wanted. Man of
the match went, unsurprisingly, to Bear for yet another ton,
although all players will have felt they contributed towards the
team effort in some way.
Man of the match:
Paul
Jeffels.
Champagne moment:
Dave
Moody...
sweeping his 2nd ball faced for
4, and telling Bear at tea "that is how to play the shot!"
