'Graveney Beat
Burgh Heath to Continue Winning Run
By Nick Goodburn
Graveney 196 - 6
Burgh Heath 111 - 9
(40 overs game)
Graveney Win by 85 runs
This match
went ahead after the shock news that Barry Gray had been omitted
from the side, with debutant Sudip Samanta making the side instead
as Nick was looking to protect the future of the club and blood new
players after recent weeks with a shortage of players
available. Despite this disappointment, however, it should be
pointed out that Barry generously turned up regardless, and umpired
all day instead, proving that he is a club man after all?!
After a 5 week
absence since the tour, Graveney skipper Paul Fanning arrived
sporting a new beard which caused a good deal of discussion. After a
look at a very bad looking wicket, and a a run through with Nick
about who had been doing well or otherwise over the past few
weeks, he decided, with Graveney due to bat first in the heat,
to ask Rob Davies and John Howard to open. There was little time
for the skipper to settle into a chair however, as, despite their
relatively good form of recent weeks, both John, popping up a catch
due to the slow pitch, and Rob, unlucky to be expertly caught at
short leg, had soon departed for ducks leaving Graveney in immediate
trouble.
The skipper
and Nick Goodburn, who had a life when dropped early in his
innings, began to rebuild, but it was not long before Paul skied one
and was caught for 14. Graveney were now 24-3. There then followed a
solid partnership of 99 between Nick Goodburn and Paul Jeffels, who
eventually departed, bowled for 61. During this time Barry Gray
managed to upset the home team by calling one of their fielders a
muppet. Whilst we know only too well that he could just as easily
have said the same to one of our players, the Burgh Heath team were
less understanding.
Pradeep Jain
(1) holed out having seemingly failed to spot that there was a man
positioned at backward square, before another good partnership of 47
between Nick and Jez Skidmore (21) followed. Some late hitting from
Nick in an unbeaten partnership of 25 with debutant Sudip Samanta (4
not out) saw Nick end up on 77 not out, and Graveny post a total of
196-6 in their 40 overs.
During the
team interval, the Burgh Heath skipper said that his team did not
want Barry to umpire during their innings. This was rather
unnecessary, and understandably upset Barry somewhat. There
followed some quite lengthy discussion before they relented and let
Barry carry on in the white coat. In the meantime, to the great
amusement of many, but unnoticed by some, Paul Jeffels had managed
to get himself locked in the toilet - a champagne moment if ever
there was one!!
When the game
got underway once more, Graveney's opening attack of Pradeep Jain
(6-0-15-1) and Sudip Samanta (7-1-21-0)produced some fiery bowling
with the opening batsmen taking the ball on the body a good number
of times. Nick's good day continued when he took a slip catch off of
Pradeep's bowling to dismiss one of the Burgh Heath openers,
following which Burgh Heath struggled to get after the bowling at
all on a difficult pitch.
All
subsequently used bowlers also returned excellent figures. Jez
Skidmore (7-1-22-1) and Kevin McGill (6-0-19-2) continued the good
work begun by the openers, and the whole team were amazed when Big
Tim's 'twin' displayed almost identical mannerisms to Big Tim in his
innings wherein he managed to survive for some time, playing one or
two lusty blows in the process. As was always likely to happen once
they had agreed to let him continue with umpiring, Barry almost
caused a diplomatic incident when the other Burgh Heath opener was
given out LBW, although to everyone but the batsman it looked
absolutely plum!
More tight
bowling from Tim Bunn (6-0-15-2) and an excellent spell by Chris
Pullen (6-3-7-1) saw the required run rate rise steadily before Rob
Davies (2-0-9-1) pouched the ninth wicket in the last over courtesy
of a second catch for Nick.
In the end
Burgh Heath had been unable to get after any of the Graveney
bowlers, and were only able to muster 111-9 in their 40 overs, with
Graveny securing their third consecutive victory, running out
winners by 85 runs
