"First Loss
Since 12th August 2000 in Season Opener”
by Mick Masters
A typical early season
wicket, damp, difficult to get the ball away and a very slow outfield.
Graveney's ten men took the field with the welcome late addition of Nick
Goodburn. The first wicket went down with only 5 on the board. Things seemed
to be looking up when Nick and skipper Rob Davies recovered the score to 32
but Rob was out from a mis-timed shot. From then on nobody really got in. A
moment of light relief came from Tony Murphy and Kevin Lacey, a clear run-out
chance being missed by Chaldon (see Champagne Moment below). There was a
nice cameo from Malcolm who scored 14 towards the end and Gareth who added
10 whilst cleverly keeping the strike away from young Thomas Masters. There
was a feeling that we needed another 30 runs.
Chaldon batted for twenty
minutes before tea and at first Graveney fielded well to keep the runs down.
Mick Masters made a very good stop from a full-blooded shot through
mid-wicket. However the Chaldon openers were in good form and the fact that
this was their fifth game of the season, already, showed. Fox went on to
make a very good, chanceless 53. Gareth took a great low (grass cutter)
catch to dismiss the Chaldon opener. Three further wickets fell but the
target was well within reach by then.
Both sides, repaired to the William IV for a
couple of pints, one of the better pubs used by our opposition.
Graveney 88 all out (R.Davies 26)
Chaldon 89 -4 (Fox 53, R.Davies 2-3, M.Wells
2-31) Man
Of Match. Rob Davies
Champagne Moment. Tony Murphy. Tony
collided with partner Kevin Lacey and ended up sprawled on the ground. The
keeper seemed unaware of the situation and Tony just made his ground then
misheard the Umpire's response to his inquiry of not-out. Tony set off for the pavilion only
to be recalled by the Umpire. (The other umpire later reported that the
wicket keeper had removed the bails with his gloves, not the ball.)
