Champagne Moments

Home Up

A 'Champagne Moment' is something out of the ordinary that happens in and around a game. It may be humorous, farcical, inept or a moment of shear brilliance.

Players who receive the most Awards during a season become the proud holder of the 'Champagne Shield'
Previous recipients of the Shield can be found at the bottom of this page.

Season 2010
Barry Gray

Barry...umpiring today despite not being selected, appearing to raise his finger and give Mark Rance out LBW, only for Mark to be recalled from the boundary when Barry having sauntered off to square leg suddenly announced he had said 'not out' and pointed to emphasise the point and end of over!

Jez Skidmore Specialist Point Jez taking one on the chin when mishandling at point.
Tim Eveleigh
Zigzag running from mid-off after ball like a ship-liner, a team mate suggested, turning in an estuary!
Tim Bunn A thunderous drive was parried (or could be described as a dropped caught and bowled) onto the  stumps by the burly Tim Bunn to run-out Kitchen(60) as the opener was backing-up.
Barry Gray

......on stopping the ball in his follow through, reacted to the young non-striker's call of "one run" by turning, leaping (some might call it falling...) and releasing the ball from all of two feet from the stumps, duly clearing them by about a foot and ending up in a heap at the bottom of them. Not satisifed with this outstanding attempt to claim the award, he then ended up in a heap behind the very same set of stumps later on whilst umpiring,  when he neglected to notice the ball being returned with reasonable force from the boundary thus being struck by it and "thump", down he went once again like a sack of spuds, much to the amusement of his "concerned" team-mates.

John O'Driscoll Either for wondering who had wandered off with his shirt from the changing room (you cannot be serious, O'D! Who would want to?) or his attempt to throw the ball in from the boundary coming to grief because the ball "stuck" to one of his plastered fingers - I imagine if that lot started to unravel it would be like watching "The Mummy"!
Howard Hamilton Obviously feeling he had played himself in, Howard challenged the bowler to “give me what you’ve got Del!” whereupon he immediately lost his middle stump, much to everyone’s amusement.
Paul Jeffels and John O'Driscoll John O'D being run-out when on as a runner for John Howard. Paul Jeffels for hitting John's car with a six.
Jez Skidmore Jez's startling catch at point.
John O'Driscoll John taking a high catch at Deep Gulley. He also took Man of the Match in this game at Warnham.
Nick Goodburn Nick taking an age to leave the crease having been given out (wrongly) LBW, followed by his throwing of bat, gloves and pads in an act of petulance.
Dave Moody Dave reverse sweeping his 2nd ball faced for 4, and telling Bear at tea "that is how to play the shot!"
Nick Goodburn
and Paul Jeffels
Nick Goodburn and Paul Jeffels both carrying injuries hobbling to a 107 run partnership at Newdigate!
