Graveney's ten men were soundly thrashed
by Dorking on Saturday. Winning the toss for the first time
this season, Nick chose to field first, and when Barry
removed the openers, who were soon followed back into the
hutch by 2 more batsmen courtesy of John Webster, Graveney
looked on top with Dorking 40-4. A good innings of 95 by
young Toby Blood, and a lack of penetrative bowling then saw
Dorking push on and recover to end up on 204-7 after their
40 overs.
In reply Graveney lost wickets
all too regularly, including 2 run outs - both involving
the skipper - and never looked like mounting a serious
threat. Nick top scored with 16, and the only moments to
savour in the batting came from a couple of late cameo
innings' by Messer’s McGill (with 13, his highest Graveney
score to date) and Tim Bunn (8 not out, and taking his
average to a healthy looking 27) before the Judge offered up
a final easy catch to put everyone out of their misery.
Man of the match went to Barry, although it was a close run
thing with Tim Bunn also taking some votes. Retiring to the
pavilion bar after the game Graveney were able to then watch
the England women's football team snatch defeat from the
jaws of victory in their World Cup penalty shoot-out loss to
France, proving that it was not just Graveney's lack of
batting that had been predictable!
