'Graveney Victorious In Season's Opener'
By Dave Moody
Newdigate 223 - 9 declared
Graveney 225 - 3
Graveney Win by 7 wickets
A
beautiful, mild sunny day greeted the Graveney players
arriving at the Brocus, well the nine that arrived on time
for the start of the match (Sumit who was "surprisingly"
waiting to be picked up by "I'm only ten minutes away"
Howard).
Skipper "Dancing
Bear" won the toss and elected to put his nine men in the
field. Pradeep, Tim "Bunn" Eveleigh, new boy Dean Weston and
"spin king" McGill all bowled well without reward as the
Newdigate openers accumulated at a steady rate. It wasn't
until the introduction of our second debutant, Sonny Weston,
that a chance was even offered but spilt by Nick. However,
the very next ball, Sonny had his first wicket thanks to
Pradeep's catch at point to dismiss Turner two short of his
fifty. Drinks were taken at that point which conveniently
coincided with the arrival of Howard and Sumit.
The oppo skipper
generously allowed Sumit to bowl, no doubt aware that
Howard's infamous SatNav had probably read Newdigate as "New
Cross Gate" and been totally flummoxed by Redhill as it
could only find "green and rolling ones"! Confusion between
Whylie and Patel lead to the later being run out by the
Goodburn/Moody combination. However, the young Newdigate
opener Whylie then achieved a well crafted 50 before edging
Sumit behind for a regulation catch to Moody. "Ringer" Rance
and Capel upped the scoring rate, the "Ringer" retiring out
after achieving his 50. That heralded the arrival of another
ex-Graveney boy, "Widescreen" Jones, but he acquired just a
single boundary before sweeping across the line and being
bowled by the "Dancing Bear". Pradeep had returned to the
attack and finally got his reward by removing Capel and then
"DB" snaffled two more wickets in consecutive balls, Sumit
completing a catch for the second one and then launching the
ball into the planeless skies above Newdigate in joyous
celebration. For the hat-trick ball, the skipper closed his
field around the bat despite Nick's argument that he should
leave everyone where they were and just bowl another full
toss! Pradeep picked up a second wicket clean bowled and
Newdigate declared at 223 for 9.
After the usual
sumptuous tea, Davies and Goodburn proceeded to the crease,
but Rob was "Clabbyed" in the second over - Graveney 5 for
1. Sumit arrived and looked as if he wanted launch every
delivery over the leg side, surviving two LBW shouts off his
first two balls. However, he finally succumbed to that
fashion attempting the same style of shot to the persevering
De Castro to leave Graveney 17 for 2 in the seventh over.
The "Bear" had now
joined Nick at the crease and, despite their respective
handicaps of niggling hamstring and dodgy ankle, they
started to up the run rate. The handicaps almost proved
their undoing as the "Bear" called for a suicidal single and
was out by a country mile if only the keeper had cleanly
gathered the throw launched into him before breaking the
wicket. How Newdigate would come to rue that chance as Nick
and "Dancing Bear" added 107 in 15 overs, both playing
sublime shots all around the ground. Nick finally departed
for a superb 65, caught by Clabby but the misery wasn't over
for Newdigate. Pradeep (34*) joined the steady and by now
hobbling "DB" in adding 101 runs to achieve victory with six
and a half overs to spare, the skipper adding an unbeaten
107 to his earlier 3 for 30 and sweep the board for the Man
of the Match votes.
Man of the match:
Paul
Jeffels.
Champagne moment:
Nick
Goodburn and Paul Jeffels both carrying injuries hobbling to a 107 run
partnership.
