'Graveney Go Down to First Defeat of the Season'
By
John O'Driscoll
Sutton III 175 - 8 (from 40 overs)
Graveney
97 all out (from 29.4 overs)
Loss by 78 runs
Graveney
travelled to Cheam Road on Bank Holiday Monday to
take on Sutton Development X1 in a new fixture. The facilities were
superb (surrey championship standard) and the visitors dressing room was
probably the biggest i`ve come across in my 40 years+ of playing
Cricket! Big enough for 4 club kit bags....at least.
Graveney`s 10 men fielded first (Howard visiting various other grounds
in Sutton first!) The weather was chilly but the rain held off.
In a 40 overs contest a youthful
Sutton made steady progress, but at one stage looked as if they might
struggle to reach 150.
`Bigger` Tim Eveleigh (3-47) took the bowling honours and must have
`shed` a few pounds with the ball being hit to him in his numerous
fielding positions.
A late flourish from Sutton`s tail-enders took their total to 175-8
aided by Graveney generously giving there opponents 25 extras!
Graveney`s batting line-up looked
good enough to keep their good start to the season going..it was not to
be. Debut ducks went to Damian Scott and Rory Macaskill. Mark Rance also
did not score (nor someone called John O'Driscoll ed.) and
big hitter Matt Webster went for 14. Only skipper `Bear` Jeffels (37)
kept his sides hopes alive but at the end running out of support as
Graveney were bowled out for 97.
A fixture though that Graveney would
like to keep especially as the Sutton fixture Sec.bought a pint for the
Graveney fixture sec.!!
Man of the match:
Paul
Jeffels.
Champagne moment:
Nick
Goodburn taking an age
to leave the crease having been given out (wrongly) LBW,
followed by his
throwing of bat, gloves and pads in an act of petulance.
